Review of Evidence on Alcohol and Health (2025)
The National Academy of Sciences was founded in Washington, D.C., in 1863. In 1970, it was followed by the National Academy of Medicine, which has since served as a key institution for evaluating and publishing high-impact scientific research.

Of the 27 studies included in the analysis, 12 provided sufficient data to assess the relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and all-cause mortality. Eight of these 12 studies contributed to a meta-analysis that produced the following key result:
🟢 16% lower risk of all-cause mortality among individuals who consumed alcohol in moderate amounts, compared to lifetime abstainers
(Relative Risk: 0.84 | 95% Confidence Interval: 0.81–0.87)
