Antioxidants, especially those found in red wine, may help counteract age-related health issues. These include reduced strength, mobility, endurance, physical activity, and slower walking speed—all of which fall under the term "frailty," a condition that primarily affects people over 50.
A research team led by Harvard Medical School has found that flavonoids, a group of polyphenol compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, may reduce the risk of frailty.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analyzed health data from three generations of participants in Framingham, Massachusetts. The results suggest that consuming 10 mg of flavonols per day can reduce the risk of frailty by 20%.
One specific flavonol, quercetin, which is particularly abundant in red wine, showed an even stronger effect: 10 mg of quercetin per day reduced the risk by 35%. The quercetin content in red wine varies but can reach up to 3 mg per 150-ml glass.
Another clear distinction that not all alcohol is the same—wine makes the difference, and in particular, red wine.
