The Future of Wine
Dear Wine & Health Friends,
When I first pointed out the threat posed by the Guttempler/MOVENDI two years ago, some conversation partners smiled in disbelief. Their “alcohol bashing” approach follows the same dramaturgy as the anti-tobacco movement. You may recall the heated discussions about health risks when guests from a non-smoking area had to pass through a smoking area on their way to the restroom.
The anti-alcohol lobby is already pushing for bans on alcohol consumption in public spaces, on restaurant terraces, and even for horrific warning images on wine bottles—similar to cigarette packaging.
Wine, however, is the cultural and indulgence beverage with the longest tradition of use. It has been tested and refined for 8,000 years. Historically, it was the drink of nobility and clergy, and for millennia it served as a safer alternative to contaminated drinking water. Today, we enjoy the longest life expectancy in human history—despite the fact that we consume alcohol, technically “a poison.”
My appeal: Let’s use common sense when evaluating the radical positions of fanatical anti-alcohol activists. We have lost touch with listening to the signals of our bodies and minds. Deep down, we should know what is good for us and what is not—and act accordingly. That includes moderate wine consumption.
Warm regards,
Dr. Herbert Braunöck
