The Outcry Had an Effect – Alcohol Warning Labels Rejected

The proposal to label alcoholic beverages as carcinogenic with mandatory warning labels has been rejected by the EU Parliament. While this decision prevents the measure from being implemented, it serves as a clear warning to the industry. This was already the third failed attempt, and it is unlikely to be the last.
Univ. Prof. Dr. Dirk von Lewinski, an expert at W&G Wine & Health, has analyzed the most relevant scientific studies on the link between cancer and alcohol. His conclusion: "In credible studies, only alcohol itself was examined—there was no differentiation between types of alcoholic beverages. There are significant differences between spirits, beer, wine, liqueurs, and sparkling wine in terms of alcohol content and effects."
With red wine, the focus is on health-promoting polyphenols, which show benefits even with moderate consumption of one to two glasses (1/8 liter) per day. Studies confirm that the risk of dying from a heart attack is reduced by up to 50%.
At W&G Wine & Health, we strictly oppose alcohol abuse. However, excessive consumption of sugar, fats, and carbohydrates also significantly increases health risks. That much is clear—even without laws or warning labels.
